Evidence Required

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to identify and source images that are suitable for incorporation within a Defence publication

Reporters must at all times demonstrate an awareness of current affairs Defence issues and public relations objectives and conduct themselves in a fair and professional manner with full regard to privacy defamation copyright and other legal concerns

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and under a range of deadline pressures that are both controlled and uncontrolled

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in an office and under operational conditions or in a simulated environment Simulation should recreate realistic office and operational scenarios in a wide range of situations that may be encountered by the Defence reporter and should cover all of the critical aspects of evidence

Range Statement

The Range Statement relates to the Unit of Competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording in the Performance Criteria is detailed below.

Images may include

Photographs that directly or indirectly illustrate stories and are suitable for commercial reproduction

Drawings or paintings sourced from libraries, galleries or other repositories or commissioned specifically for the story

Maps, charts or related sketches from a variety of sources

Line drawings, diagrams, cartoons from a variety of sources

Images that can be used in newspapers, magazines and on internet web sites

Image sources may include

Defence photographers

Image libraries, internal and external to defence image libraries

Museums, galleries, libraries and other institutions

Newspaper or publishers' offices

Internet

Artists, cartoonists or other specialists

Map stores or cartographers

Newsworthy issues may include

Information likely to appeal to readers because it is topical, different, unique or relevant to them

Caption details may include

Name, rank, appointment and unit of the person(s) in the photograph

Date, time and place of the depicted image
